The Sox need a short term Short Stop
Yesterday the Red Sox shipped Marco Scutaro to the Rockies for Clayton Mortensen, who is a middle of career, rotation depth pitcher. This move will free up 5 million dollars in salary. Scutaro WILL start for the Rockies at 2nd base. This comes just weeks after the sox shipped starting SS Jed Lowrie to the Astros for excellent RP Mark Melancon. Yes, they did sign Nick Punto but he is a career .250 hitter with limited speed and no power. The Red Sox said that Mike Aviles and Punto will "platoon" at short stop. In more Red Sox news they resigned Daniel Bard to a one year 1.6 million dollar contract. Also thought to be retired J.D drew says that he would play in 2012 if possible. The Red Sox didn't not try to resign him leaving Crawford and Ellsbury with no left fielder. Maybe Ryan Kalish. Kalish missed all of 2011 with a shoulder injury but should be back soon. Speaking of retirements David Eckstien, a former world series MVP, has officially retired, yes he did not play in 2011 but was opening to comeback in June or July. A former red sox player named Julio Lugo may be on the "comeback trail" after signing a minor league contract with the Indians. A different former patriots is drawing interest from the A's. That former Red Sox is named Manny Ramirez and would face a 50 game suspension.
